Ancestors & Elders

IMG_0572.JPG

I am honoured and excited to be part of Ancestors & Elders, produces by the Ukrainian Shumka Dancers. I’ll be working closely with my brother Mark Klopoushak, Mike Romaniak, Anders Hunter (of Eya Hey Nakoda), Barry Bilinsky, and Joe Hoffman to create something unique, honest, and special.

My role will be to co-compose, co-arrange, perform, and record the music for this 45-minute ballet.

Pontiac Enchanté Recital (with video)

Enchanted indeed!

It was such a pleasure to perform at Venturing Hills Farm Sunday afternoon as part of their Pontiac Enchanté concert series. Phil Chiu and I had another opportunity to reprise the repertoire of our recent SOUNDWORLDS disc, performing the entire album from start to finish.

It's always a joy to perform in that wonderful space, and I'm very grateful to the Carson Becke, his family, and Festival Pontiac Enchanté for the opportunity.  They have a few concerts left in their 2017 season, so do check them out!  And as always, I'd like to thank Philip Chiu for his outstanding musicianship and collaborative spirit.  We really tried some new ideas during that performance!  This was my favourite part of Sunday's recital:

Announcing Ironwood Quartet

I'm very excited to announce the birth of a new project: 3 of my buddies from the NAC orchestra and I have banded together, picked out a name, and have made it "facebook official." Born out of the NAC Orchestra's WolfGANG Sessions, we're calling ourselves Ironwood.

Ironwood, Ottawa's new "take-no-prisoners" string quartet, plays for the first time under the new moniker on Sunday, December 13th, 5pm, at The Record Centre in Hintonburg.  Their set includes new music for string quartet by Philip Glass, Bryce Dessner (The National), and Ana Sokolovic. Expect a performance full of energy, driving rhythms, trance-inducing journeys - string playing like you have never heard before.

Ironwood is Jessica Linnebach and Carissa Klopoushak (violins), Julia MacLaine (cello), and David Marks (viola), a quartet of curious musicians who spend most (but not all) of their musical time playing with the NAC orchestra.

Here's a clip from our last WolfGANG Session show on November 21, 2015:

December 2014: Recitals! Recording!

Gallery345poster

Grand announcement time!

I'm thrilled to let you all know that I'll be recording an album with Philip Chiu, performing sonatas by Leos Janacek, Claude Debussy, and Healey Willan, and shorter pieces by Pat Carrabré and Claude Vivier.

Aside from the obvious reasons for recording (it's so much fun!), I'm nearing the end of my tenure with the Canada Council Instrument Bank's 1869 Vuillaume violin and Vuillaume workshop bow - and there's no better way to celebrate than to record!  The pieces we're recording are things that the Phil and I have performed together a great many times, starting as early as the 2009 Eckhardt-Grammatté competition winner's tour (Carrabré's Chaconne was the commissioned piece that year), and more recently on our 2013 Debut Atlantic Tour.

We've just finished a couple of private house concerts in Montreal and Gatineau, QC, and are excited to bring the show to Toronto on Tuesday, December 9th, at Gallery 345.  Please come!  Bring friends!
